Before taking their customary summer break, seven Snappers (1904's Photographic Group),  Barry Agar, Jonathan Bolgar, Roger Bonner, Brian Chan, Tony Lavelle, Paul Main and Bob Pigott, along with Ruth Bolgar and Margaret Pigott visited the University of Bristol’s Botanical Gardens just off the Downs. The group enjoyed a few hours of sunshine as they wandered the many trails and paths through this wonderful little gem that borders the Downs.

The gardens contain more than 4,500 plant species from such diverse climates as steamy tropical jungles to frozen tundras. There is even a prehistoric area full of brooding tree ferns and mosses. The Chinese garden is a delight with dragonflies skimming the surface of its lily pond, clumps of tall, gently waving bamboo, intricate woven pergolas and a chromium statuette shining brightly.

The gardens surround ‘The Holmes’, a large residential house, which was built in 1879 in the 'Arts and Crafts' style. It was used as a base for top US Army generals during the planning of the Normandy landings in 1944.

The Snappers will resume their monthly meetings on Tuesday, 16th September, in the Upper Studio, 10:00 - 12:00. All members of 1904 are welcome to join us. Drop in for a cup of coffee and a biscuit and view our images.
