Every Wednesday evening during the season (Oct - May), BRISTOL 1904 ARTS provides an evening's entertainment and art for its members. But the national days are always special and celebrated on the Wednesday closest to the national patron saint. And last night it conveniently fell on the actual date of St. David's Day, for our Welsh members.
And what could be more Welsh than a choir and part of our "Chorus" provided the solution by singing three distinctly Welsh numbers: Dafydd Y Gareg Wen (David Of The White Rock) – sung in Welsh, Sospan Fach (One Little Pan) – sung in Welsh and an old favourite We’ll Keep A Welcome – sung in English.
Another feature of the Welsh Night was the recitation by our resident Welsh Actor, Poet and Raconteur, Chris Torpy, of a number of Dylan Thomas poems including "The October Wind", the lyrical "Fern Hill" and an extract from "Quite Early One Morning".
And our '1904' artists, were not to be left out by any means! The subject theme for the night, set by the Chairman for the evening, Gareth Rees (top photo-centre), was “Old Land of my Fathers “ (the Welsh national anthem title, in English). And so the artists provided their own tribute to the Welsh members amongst us, with images of Wales including Rugby shirts, Daffodils, historical coal mining pits, Castles and Mountains and Traffic back to Wales!! 😀
See the lovely portfolio of painting sketches, done on the night, below.
